The Floris Kappeyne Trio and the Matthias Van den Brande Trio are very close. First of all, they share the same double bassist and drummer. On top of that, they both have released their new albums on ZenneZ Records. Aside from the similarities, they distinguish themselves through their different vantage points and rich musical contrasts.

The Floris Kappeyne Trio is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. For the recording of the recent releashed album Closer, Floris Kappeyne, Tijs Klaassen and Wouter Kühne travelled to a castle in the South of France. Huddled together in one room they recorded while using the close-miking technique, making the album sound incredibly near and intimate. Hypnotic rhythmic patterns, immersive electronic timbres and the textural accompaniment of Klaassen on bass and Kühne on drums support Kappeyne’s sparse, contemplative piano playing in a style that breaks down the boundaries between composition and spontaneity.

Mutual friendship and a strong musical connection form the basis of the Matthias Van den Brande Trio. Saxophonist Matthias Van den Brande has lived everywhere from his native Belgium tot he United States. His melodic compositions are rooted in jazz tradition. At the same time, his trio sounds contemporary and accessible. This concert will be the release of their first album, Three Sides of a Coin.
