Echo is an opera without libretto, or a dance performed by professional singers. It’s about the resonance the individual finds in its surroundings, and the influence of those surroundings on the individual. The title captures the friction between the ego and its desire for resonance. Echo is also the name of the unique ensemble of nine singers, synthesizer, two pianos, and percussion.
The music was composed by piano and keyboard player Floris Kappeyne, the choreography was supervised by Sophie Prins, and the design is by Maria Ravelli. The interdisciplinary performance was commissioned by Week van de Jazz, an initiative by Vereniging Nederlandse Jazzpodia en Jazzfestivals (VNJJ). The event is linked to International Jazz Day 2022, a global initiative by Unesco in collaboration with Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz.
