The festival The Art of the Trio at Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ and Bimhuis features trios in many different variations. Each trio is a case in point that proves the wealth and magic a trinity can evoke. A trio has the power of an ensemble and the tension of solo playing. These four completely different concerts and genres demonstrate the maximum range of the trio: from jazz to vocal classical music. As a bonus philosopher/writer Roel Bentz van den Berg will give a lecture on the symbolic meaning of the number 3.

The
trio is a perfect vehicle for improvisation. Pianist Guus Janssen will
play the unique 31 tone Fokker organ, with trumpet player Marco Blaauw
and trombone player Wolter Wierbos. Their spontaneous improvisations
move between jazz and contemporary music.

Nieuw Amsterdams Peil will perform the lyrical masterpiece Canto
General by Dutch composer Peter Schat. Plus improvisations by Guus
Janssen and his jazz trio.

players and voices play leading roles in this selection of wonderful
classical trio music. Three trios will perform highlights by Beethoven
and Dvořák, in addition to the almost heavenly Stabat Mater by Arvo Pärt
for string trio and vocal trio.

German-Argentinean composer Mauricio Kagel, one of the 20th century’’s most important composers, has written many works for trio. This concert will feature two of them, Trio in drei Sätzen by Fresco Pianotrio and Dressur by Schlagtrio Köln. Trio Baars/Moore/Van der Voort will play arrangements by Rouppe van der Voort of compositions by Kagel as platforms for brand new spontaneous improvisations.
