Festival in the shape of an egg is a collaboration of the Karnatic Lab, TryTone and Mista’Peo, three organisations that are, each in their own way, occupied with the promotion of the newest contemporary, composed and improvised music. In ‘Hot Hearts, Cool Minds’, the international group walks the unbeaten paths in the field of contemporary composed music with non-western influences. Amphibios is a cinematic installation of Monique Verhoeckx (composition-Albert Veenendaal). Deep Fried Angel Fish brings lively melodies with a sharp edge in which influences of klezmer and music from the Balcans can be heard. Collision Palace is a collective of young musicians with various backgrounds and (re)interprets different impro-languages of composers like Frith, Oswald, Rzewski, Mengelberg and (tonight) John Zorn. Zorn’s ‘game piece’ Cobra is a spectacular game of improvisation, in other words, a concept with rules in which dynamics arise between a 12-piece ensemble of musicians and a conductor who keeps the whole thing under control. There are 2 cinematic istallations to bee seen: ‘Convex’ of Coen Fransen and the TCTM-1960 of Bjoern Hofmans. ‘A meaningful theme, the egg and the new jazz. The egg as a symbol of fragile perfection, beauty and peace; the young improvisors of the 21st century wreck their brains over the shape of their creation’ (‘Jazz’ Magazine). www.festivalintheshapeofanegg.nl
