EVAN PARKER MIGHT I SUGGEST #1:
The first BIMHUIS CITY LINKS consists of two evenings curated by an absolute innovator of the saxophone, Evan Parker, with exciting improvisations by groundbreaking musicians from London and Amsterdam.
For over 40 years there has been a lively interaction between improvising musicians from London and Amsterdam, thanks to platforms such as the Bimhuis, Evan Parker’s concert series Might I Suggest, and the ICP Orchestra, all of which will take part in BIMHUIS CITY LINKS: LONDON.
BIMHUIS CITY LINKS is a new concert series created especially for the 40th anniversary of the Bimhuis in 2014. Since its foundation the Bimhuis has supported exchange between Amsterdam’s improvised musicians and similarly interesting scenes from other cities. The series will highlight the scenes of Chicago, Oslo, Berlin and London, complemented in the future by other dynamic cities and unique musicians.
The first BIMHUIS CITY LINKS concentrates on London and consists of two evenings curated by Evan Parker, key figure in European improvised music and an absolute innovator of the saxophone. The British saxophone player has developed a stunning improvisational style including circular breathing, double tones, overtones and live-sampling. The subtitle MIGHT I SUGGEST refers to his eponymous monthly evening at the London jazz club Vortex.
Pioneering computer musician Joel Ryan will initiate both evenings with electronic variations on the solo music of Evan Parker. Since 1984 Joel has been an active participant of STEIM (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music) in Amsterdam. He will be followed by two groups every night.
Thursday features the acoustic trio of Evan Parker, guitarist John Russell and bassist John Edwards. ‘Pure vintage violence’, is how an English blog has described their performance at the Vortex. Expect improvisations with urgency comparable to the innovative free music of the 1960s.
Parker, Russell and Holland’s most adventurous drummer, Han Bennink, will perform a new version of the album Topography of the Lungs (1970), a milestone in the history of European improvised music. John Russell will take the place of the original guitarist on the album, Derek Bailey, who died in 2005.
After the concert pianist Dave Burrell will perform. The solo series by Dave Burrell are becoming a tradition at the Bimhuis. This year he will return for a new series of solo concerts in which he will present his unique take on jazz history. Burrell, a pioneer of the 1960s New York avant-garde, was the musical partner of groundbreaking artists such as Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders.
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
