TryTone, a cooperation of a number of young Amsterdam musicians, organizes the fifth European TryTone Jazz Festival from october 15 until 20. The festival offers a highly interesting selection of contemporary European improvised music in Amsterdam (october 15 Zaal 100, october 16 &17 Bimhuis, october 18 Panama), Rotterdam and Tilburg. Three other intriguing European ensembles will perform at the Bimhuis besides the TryTone groups Ninsk, Man Bites Dog and Olthuis & Veenendaal. Guitarist Andreas Willers founded BLUeCOllar in 1990 and recently presented the cd ‘Tin Drum Stories’, inspired by motives from ‘Die Blechtrommel’ written by Gunther Grass. ‘Even the smallest ensemble will always sound like an orchestra with Andreas Willers’, is what Gitarre Actuel wrote. Octurn’s latest project connects with the most recent cd ‘Dimensions’ and the musical direction of the group. The music is lightly inspired by ritual Tibettan music. Toxicum came out of a collaboration between Danish drummer Stefan Pasborg and Lithuanian saxophonist Liudas Mockunas. They are two musicians with the abillity to create music which is surrounded with a roughness and energy that is rare in the contemporary jazz scene. An unorthodox mixture in which expressive burnout goes hand in hand with beautiful ballads, cinematic horror with rock backgrounds and Baltic apocalytic hymns with translucent lullabies.
