ESTAFEST

Boy Edgar Prize-winners Anton Goudsmit (Ploctones) and Oene van Geel (Zapp4) form Estafest together with Mete Erker (Artvark SQ) and Jeroen van Vliet (Gatecrash). They take turns in ‘abstract, cinematic compositions’ (NRC).

Four leading maestros from Dutch music take turns in Estafest, improvising with short compositions from each of the band members. Boy Edgar Prize-winners guitarist Anton Goudsmit and violist Oene van Geel already played as a duo, as have saxophonist Mete Erker and pianist Jeroen van Vliet. Joining forces in Estafest turns out to be a stroke of genius.

‘They play together like dancing swallows’, de Volkskrant wrote about their live album. NRC, another Dutch newspaper, was also full of praise: “Estafest is a quartet of strings and wind, pushing and pulling each other in abstract, cinematic compositions. The quartet crawls around teeming with adventure.”

Guitarist Anton Goudsmit describes Estafest’s music as ‘chamber jazz’. The guitarist made a namefor himself in New Cool Collective and Ploctones. Oene van Geel plays in Zapp String Quartet, Meter Erker is a member of Artvark Saxophone Quartet and Jeroen van Vliet plays in Eric Vloeimans’ Gatecrash and Kytecrash.
