The Bimhuis presents a mini festival with three concerts by prominent contemporary musicians from the New York downtown scene. For his solo performance Taking Trips to America cello player Erik Friedlander based his music on photographs made on the road by his parents and film fragments by director Bill Morrison. American roots music is an important element in the presentation. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Jen Shyu presents her trail-blazing solo project Inner Chapters, in which she improvises on traditional and original music. With voice, dance, piano and ethnic instruments Shyu investigates her personal background and explores moods, from dark and mysterious to sensual and ecstatic. Guitarist Mary Halvorson and viola player Jessica Pavone sing and play expressive duo improvisations based on quirky compositions and melodic songs. ‘An amalgam of experimental folk, rock and chamber music that feels both meticulous and raw’ (New York Times).
