The Eric Boeren Quartet derives his setting to the classic group of Ornette Coleman and mainly used to play his music. The album Cross Breeding (Bimhuis 005, 1997) is proof of that. Over the years Boeren’s own compositions became stronger, just like Coleman’s music, marked by strong jumpy melodies, deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. ‘Ornette’s stuff is some of jazz’s most playful, and these guys put romping front and center. Boeren’s own tunes are pretty damn frolicsome themselves.’ (Downbeat).
