In 2004 the French Académie du Jazz presented the European Musician of the Year Award to Enrico Rava. This Italian trumpet player and Miles Davis adept, had made a name for himself in the late 60s in Torino, a hot spot for American musicians at the time. He then gravitated into avant-garde circles playing with Gato Barbieri, then later with Steve Lacy and the Globe Unity Orchestra. With his own groups Raya developed a lyrical style combining free jazz with classical and pop influences. One of the current members of his latest band for which he has recorded several albums for the ECM label, is trombonist Gianluca Petrella, winner of last year’s DownBeat Critics Poll in the category ‘Rising Star’ and the Paul Acket Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival, as ‘Artist Deserving Wider Recognition’.
