Emmet Cohen Trio
Emmet Cohen piano, Felix Moseholm bass, Kyle Poole drums
Emmet Cohen is known for his fluent stride piano playing that was inspired by legends from the past, but never sounds dated. The New York pianist even envisions a future for the virtuosic, danceable style that was popularized by pianists such as James P. Johnson and Fats Waller, and that informed the music of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. Future Stride is the apt title of Cohen’s most recent album which includes both standards and original compositions.
As a finalist of the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, Emmet Cohen was received at the White House by president Obama at age twenty-one. Cohen learned vintage piano styles through his regular gigs in jazz clubs and by collaborating with veterans such as Benny Golson, Ron Carter and Jimmy Cobb. During lockdown he created the popular YouTube series Live From Emmet’s Place featuring illustrious guest musicians such as Veronica Swift, Nicolas Payton en Christian McBride.
