For a good 20 years they have been playing together and last summer saw the release of their first album as Duo Dulfer Directie, which has been received with great acclaim by press and audiences alike: tenor saxophonist and jazz icon Hans Dulfer and Cyril Directie, one of the most well-known drummers in The Netherlands, also producer and remixer. He played with the likes of New Cool Collective, Daughters of Soul and Jett Rebel. The tracks on the album are accessible, whether it concerns jazz, funk, reggae, disco or Surinamese dance music. Guests on the album include Candy Dulfer, Henny Vrienten, Joseph Bowie (Defunkt) and The Kaseko Newborns. The duo will also welcome all of them (apart from Henny Vrienten) at the BIMHUIS.

October 1 is a special date for tenor sax player Hans Dulfer and the Bimhuis: October 1, 1974 was the opening date of the first Bimhuis at Oudeschans, of which Dulfer was one of the founders. During his career Hans Dulfer has kept his ears open for new sounds, energetic beats and catchy melodies. ‘Dulfer rambles on… still a driving force in Dutch jazz and pop music’ (NRC).

‘Early 2017 I found a video in my phone with Hans and I jamming, just the two of us during a soundcheck. The naked sound of drums and sax sounded so full that I immediately came with the idea for this project. Hans was enthusiastic and we hit the studio. I had a number of grooves for Hans to improvise on, he did not want us to have further musical cues. After these sessions I post-produced some and added some amazing contributions by our friends’ (Cyril Directie).
