DUO BAARS-HENNEMAN & AB BAARS TRIO
DUO BAARS-HENNEMAN & AB BAARS TRIO
- Starts
- 20:30
Concert with two acts featuring Ab Baars, a renowned player in the international jazz and improvised music scene as a saxophone, clarinet and sahakuhachi player and composer.
‘There’s a breathless tension in these musical dialogues… incredibly touching and intellectually thrilling’, said Signal to Noise Magazine about Duo Baars Henneman. Viola player Ig Henneman and multi-reedist Ab Baars have been playing together since the 1980s and since 1999 have been performing as an internationally renowned duo. As separate band leaders they are leading voices in the world of Dutch jazz and improvisation.
For 25 years Ab Baars has formed a trio with double bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Martin van Duynhoven. The band leader himself improvises on tenor sax, clarinet and shakuhachi. The trio’s music rarely relies on recognizable song forms, but stays attractive nevertheless because of its clear and concise structure.
‘The trio has evolved from good to better to best’, ‘Baars blows harder than most tenor players, but on clarinet and in the Japanese pieces he proves himself to be a master of reaching the inner consciousness. Drummer Martin van Duynhoven has a sense of tonality comparable to a bass player. Wilbert de Joode plucks the strings as if he’s behind a drum kit’ (Vrij Nederland).
Afterwards, in the cafe, free admission:
