From the time that he did not yet write his characteristic complex clouds of sound, but continued the Hungarian musical tradition where his predecessors had stopped. The composer Kurtág called this First string quartet ‘Bartók’s seventh quartet’. The special combination is complemented by Ligeti’s Viola Sonata, which brings both pieces together.
