The closing day of dOek #4 starts with three musicians with open ears and open hearts. A conversation in the language of sound and color, rhythm and melody. The guzheng is a Chinese instrument with 21 strings that are to be plucked, dating from 200 BC. Xu Fengxia, graduate from the Shanghai Music Conservatory, gives this classic instrument a new role. She performs together with Dutch bass master Wilbert de Joode and Hamid Drake from Chicago who, with his open and energetic charisma, is a guarantee for an inspiring encounter. The Cortet puts together four musicians that are connected by their experiences in acoustic improvisation as well as in the electronic field with its specific aesthetics, sense of form and sound. The saxophone as an analog synthesizer, the harp as a percussion instrument, the piano as a sinus organ, the synthesizer as an acoustic phenomenon. Acoustic, electronic chamber music. Who plays what?! Wolter Wierbos invites new guests in Wollo’s World. This third edition closes the festival. Wolter: ‘Once I saw Hamid playing at the Bimhuis and then I figured that his light grooving style would fit really well with Franky’s music.’ Except for Drake, all members of Wollo’s World come from Sunchild, Franky Douglas’ group that plays jazz with the unmistakable Surinam and Antillian roots. Douglas wrote a lot of new pieces for Wollo’s World.
