dOeK FESTIVAL #11

Amsterdam is a magnet for improvising musicians from all over the world, partly thanks to the eight musicians united in dOeK. Throughout the year they organize performances with talented and internationally leading musicians. The highlight is the dOeK Festival, from May 1-5 on various locations in Amsterdam. The Bimhuis will host two festival nights with high-end international improvised music. The ensembles are a mix of existing groups (with or without guests) and temporary formations made up of the cream of the Dutch and international improv scenes. More information: www.doekfestival.org

First night of the dOeK Festival at the Bimhuis. Saxophone/clarinet player Michael Moore and keyboardist Cor Fuhler will perform with ICP cellist Tristan Honsinger, like on their album Monitor, which was described by Downbeat as ‘jazz-inflected improvisational chamber music… balancing the players’ outside leanings with sufficient structure to provide a cohesive, enjoyable experience.’

Saxophonist Theo Loevendie and double bassist Arjen Gorter are the precursors of dOeK who have provided the inspiration for this initiative. They have been playing together since 1972 when they were part of the Theo Loevendie Consort.

The trio of saxophone player John Dikeman will perform with two renowned guests: trumpet player Roy Campbell Jr., an undisputed trendsetter from New York, and the Fleming Peter Jacquemyn, who attacks his double bass much like he chops trees in his occupation as a wood sculptor.
