DHAFER YOUSSEF

BIRDS REQUIEM

Dhafer Youssef oed/zang, Eivind Aarset gitaar, Kristjan Randalu piano, Philip Donkin bas, Ferenc Nemeth drums/percussie

Dhafer Youssef’s Arabic voice instantly grips audiences. ‘An important artist for the east-west-fusion in jazz music’ (de Volkskrant).

Dhafer Youssef has been conquering venues and festivals all over the world with his hypnotic voice and virtuoso playing on oud, the Arabic lute. The Tunisian singer/lute player already grabbed attention while collaborating with progressive Norwegian jazz musicians Nils Petter Molvaer and Bugge Wesseltoft. Soon he was hailed by critics as ‘one of the most appealing stars of world music’ (The Guardian). At the Bimhuis he will perform new music from the international album release Birds Requiem, featuring Dutch drummer Chander Sardjoe.

‘His voice is unusually flexible and reaches from East to West’ (Volkskrant).

‘The music of Dhafer Youssef is an elegant fusion of jazz improvisations and classical Arabic influences. Youssef’s music is rooted in the spiritual Sufi tradition, yet it has always been receptive to the jazz, rock and electronica he has embraced so successfully’ (NRC).
