Denise Jannah is one of the top jazz vocalists in The Netherlands. There’s even an award named after her. The Denise Jannah Award is handed out at the Grachtenfestival Jazz Competition, for which she takes part in the jury. This year, the award was won by the band NAUSYQA, which will perform together with the illustrious singer.
The name NAUSYQA is a nod to the famous Japanese animation film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. The band does in fact take a lot of inspiration from films. The music can be described as imaginative, narrative, and full of energy. The members are from Portugal, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands. They’re schooled in jazz and strongly influenced by electronic music, post-rock, and flamenco.
Singer Denise Jannah is internationally renowned for her voice as well as her radiant appearance. Of her nine albums, four were released by the legendary jazz label Blue Note. Among many other prizes, she has won the Edison Popular and the Edison Jazz Audience Award. She has sung for, among others, Queen Beatrix, Nelson Mandela, and Bill Clinton. She has received some of the highest official decorations in both Surinam and The Netherlands.
