LECTURE ‘OFF THE RECORD’, PART 2 BY NEAL PERES DA COSTA

After decades of pioneering the period performance practice, Neal Peres da Costa has researched authentic Romantic music practices of the 19th and early 20th century. Studying early recordings and transcriptions he discovered that current ways of playing Romantic music are fundamentally different.

In 2012 he published a fascinating and much-lauded book on the subject, called ‘Off the Record’ (Oxford University Press). His research work has proven invaluable to piano tutors and pianists of the current generation.

In two lectures on two Saturday morning during the festival, Neal Peres da Costa will illustrate the great dilemmas in interpretation. These lectures can be visited separately, but it is recommended to visit both for a comprehensive overview. (Part 1 of the lecture is held on Saturday 16 November in the main hall of Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ).

Part II: ‘Nineteenth-century expressive techniques: case studies of the comparison between early recorded evidence and written texts.’

In this second lecture Neal Peres da Costa will illustrate the history of expressive techniques as discussed in the first lecture. Several case studies will be discussed, demonstrating the gap between tutorials and actual performance.
