From April 7 to 11 the EYE Film Institute presents the Film Biennial, with extraordinary film screenings at several Amsterdam locations. The programme is a collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which presents a selection from its internationally renowned film collection. The Film Biennial screens films that relate to other art disciplines, such as music, visual arts, theatre and poetry.
One of the programme’s highlights is the multimedia film screening of De Bankroet Jazz Live! (The Bankruptcy Jazz Live!), a Roxy Movies (Frank Herrebout and Leo van Maaren) and EYE co-production. De Bankroet Jazz Live! is the recent and only film adaptation of the swinging screenplay by Flemish poet Paul van Ostaijen, which he wrote in 1921 among the ruins of post-war Europe. It’s considered the first genuine Dada screenplay ever. The film is made in 1920s style, according to the process of collage invented by the Dadaists. Ready made film footage and partially ready made sounds are absorbed in an chaotic, avant-gardist performance. During its Dutch première at the Bimhuis De Bankroet Jazz! will be accompanied by a seven-piece jazz band led by Wouter van Bemmel, with the help of singers, actors and a children’s choir.
This première is part of the Film Biennial, which takes place at EYE (Vondelpark), Paradiso, Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, Pathé Tuschinski, OBA and Compagnietheater.
