DAVID MURRAY BLACK SAINT QUARTET

David Murray-tenor sax, Lafayette Gilchrist-piano, Jaribu Shahid-bass, Malik Washington-drums

Today David Murray is still one of the most productive and open-minded tenor players. In recent years he recorded CDs with African musicians, a gypsy ensemble and a Latin big band, among many other projects. His Black Saint Quartet is named after the Italian jazz label for which he recorded 17 albums between 1978 and 1993. With piano talent Lafayette Gilchrist, Murray recalls this period, where he joined the urge to experiment with his powerful, style of playing rooted in gospel. ‘The most formidable tenor soloist of his generation’ (Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings).
