Saxophonist and clarinettist David Kweksilber, winner of the Deloitte Jazz Award and other important Dutch prizes, is at home in both the jazz and classical music traditions. He plays with the New Cool Collective Big Band and the Beau Hunks, as well as the ASKO|Schönberg Ensemble. During this Holland Festival he presents his own Big Band, featuring an impressive line-up of musicians from the Dutch improvisational and contemporary classical music worlds. Kweksilber aims for innovation and surprise, following in the footsteps of famous groundbreaking big bands of the 20th century. The set list includes classics such as City of Glass (1948/51) by Robert Graettinger, and Igor Stravinsky’s Ebony Concerto (1945), but first and foremost Kweksilber’s Big Band will serve as a platform for new works by composers such as Maarten Altena, Corrie van Binsbergen, Cornelis de Bondt, Anke Brouwer, Loek Dikker, Ron Ford, Sander Germanus, Jeff Hamburg, Guus Janssen, Hilary Jeffery, Geert van Keulen, Arnoud Noordegraaf, Keyla Orozco, Piet-Jan van Rossum, Jasna Velickovic and Friso van Wijck. Two evenings, each with a different programme, will explore past and present musical styles. Composers will put each player’s virtuosity to the test. > > From September 2008 the DKBB will play at the Bimhuis each last monday of the month < < Tonight the Bimhuis cafe-restaurant will be serving a buffet menu instead of its usual a-la-carte menu (euro 15, from 19 hours). Reservations recommended: 020-7882158. With thanks to Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst and NFPK+.
