DAVE LIEBMAN & RICHIE BEIRACH DUO

Harmonically sophisticated duo improvisations by saxophonist Dave Liebman (ex-Miles Davis) and pianist Richie Beirach (ex-Chet Baker), who have known each other for almost 50 years.

These veterans from the New York jazz scene have been playing together since the late 1960s. Whenever their busy schedules allow them, they improvise together as a duo, combining standards with harmonically sophisticated playing in the tradition of 20th century composers such as Bartók, Scriabin and Webern.

Saxophone and flute player Dave Liebman played in the bands of Miles Davis (the On the Corner LP) and Elvin Jones around 1972. At the same time Richie Beirach played with Stan Getz. He also performed with Chet Baker. Liebman and Beirach formed various bands together, including the fusion group Lookout Farm and the all-star formation Quest.

‘It’s the very lushness of Beirach’s chording and the frequent but almost subliminal displacements of the rhythmic pattern that cue Liebman for his more adventurous explorations’ (Penguin Guide to Jazz).
