Dareyn Q.7 ‘Ghost Secrets’ | Tony Overwater’s Spirits special edition ft. Rima Khcheich
Saturday13 January 2024

Mysticism and spirituality are keywords in this double concert, where Eastern and Western instruments become one. Tony Overwater’s Spirits floats between Persian, Turkish and Arabic music, where improvisation creates magic. Overwater was already a celebrated jazz bassist when Arabic music triggered a major turnaround in him. He developed his own playing style, influenced by instruments such as the Arab oud, lute and gamba. Joining the group especially for this concert will be Lebanese singer Rima Khcheich, clarinettist Maarten Ornstein and oud player Nizar Rohana. The rhythm section consists of Tony Overwater on violone, a precursor of the double bass, and Ruven Ruppik on percussion.

Dareyn, which means ’two worlds’ in the Ottoman language, contemporarily combines the mystical sound of the Istanbul kemenche – with its heritage of traditional music originating from Istanbul and the Silk Road – and the deep-rooted sound of the cello. With her unrivalled playing on the Istanbul kemenche, Emine Bostancı, together with expressive cellist Maya Fridman, forms the core of the ensemble Dareyn. Every two years, they invite new, inspiring musicians of different genres to collaborate with. In Dareyn’s latest collaboration, ‘Dareyn Q.7’, they are pianist Franz von Chossy and drummer Vinsent Planjer. ‘Dareyn Q.7′ explores the dialogue between different musical traditions, such as Ottoman makam and taksim, Sufi music, Western classical music and jazz music. Many of these different cultures and beliefs share a common concept: there are seven layers of heaven that lead to some form of enlightenment, self-discovery or spiritual connection. Inspired by this, Dareyn invites the listener to take this journey with them.

Tonight, Dareyn’s new album Ghost Secrets will be presented.
