DAMN IF I
Concept and direction: Daniëlle van Vree. Perfomance: Brigitte Defaix, Uli Neumann, Boukje Schweigman, Huug van Tienhoven, David Weber-Krebs, John Taylor
A concert of motion where sound becomes tangible. With two pieces by Archie Shepp as a starting point (Damn if I know and New Africa from 1969), six performers will move in a mimography by Daniëlle van Vree. Sound becomes tangible and visible, silence remains, musicians and instruments are one. The ‘bass’ drives, is solid and creates the basis with the ‘drummer’. ‘Trumpet’ and ’trombone’ are staying close together, the ‘saxophone’ plays his solo on top of every other player and the ‘piano’ comments. A desire for each other is brewing, they are competing and the urge to break out is growing slowly. Through the limitations of the roles you can hear the dissonants and conflicts in the bodies of the six players. What keeps them together is the necessity to play that one beautiful piece of music where everything is connected and you can let go.
