CRISTINA ZAVALLONI SPECIAL DISH
Cristina Zavalloni zang/composities, Cristiano Arcelli altsax, Daniele Mencarelli bas, Alessandro Paternesi drums
Singular, playful mix of pop hits, bel canto, poetry and jazz by classically trained singer Cristina Zavalloni, known from the operas of Louis Andriessen.
Special Dish is the new band of Italian singer Cristina Zavalloni, who connects extremely varied styles with her extraordinary voice. The result is a playful mix of pop hits by Eurythmics, Beach Boys and Matia Bazar with among others Greek and Brazilian songs, poetry and jazz standards. Zavalloni has a background in both bel canto and contemporary music and she performed in Louis Andriessen’s compositions La Commedia and Anaïs Nin.
Alongside Zavalloni, Special Dish consists of three musicians who use improvisation to move between pop, folk, classical and jazz. The line/up is compact and flexible: alto sax, electric bass and drums. The band members have also played in Zavalloni’s Radar Band. Sax player Cristiano Arcelli has composed several songs alongside Zavalloni herself. This month sees the release of a new album by Special Dish.
‘Cristina is an absolute wizard. With her virtuosity she is able to express inner feelings in clear and well-defined ways’ (Louis Andriessen in an interview with de Volkskrant).
