CRAIG TABORN TRIO, DAVE BURRELL
Exciting, innovative piano playing by Craig Taborn, ‘one of the visionaries of the current wave’ (Downbeat). His trio has gained great acclaim with the album Chants (ECM).
Those who like exciting, innovative piano playing simply can’t ignore Craig Taborn. Since the release of his solo album Avenging Angel he is counted among the ‘absolute elite of jazz pianists’ (de Volkskrant) and devotees of contemporary classical can also appreciate the way he explores the tones and overtones of the piano in their smallest details. For eight years now he forms a close-knit piano trio with double bassist Scott Morgan and drummer Gerald Cleaver. A highlight in their collaboration is their album Chants (ECM, 2013), which appeared in the 2013 end-of-year-lists of New York Times and L.A. Times. ‘Deep, seductive intelligence at work.’, ‘He’s delivering strong melody and rhythm without giving up any of his mystery’ (New York Times).
Craig Taborn topped several Downbeat Critics Polls in the categories Rising Star Piano and Electronic Keyboard. He made name as a sideman with Dave Douglas, James Carter and Roscoe Mitchell, and attracted attention with his electronic experiments. Influences of electronica can be traced in his purely acoustic piano playing.
