NATE WOOLEY QUINTET

Unfortunately, the first part of the concert with Craig Taborn has been cancelled due to a hand injury.*
– Have you bought/reserved a ticket? Then the Bimhuis will contact you. –
The concert of the Nate Wooley Quintet will take place at 8:30 PM instead, and will last 2 sets.

Hard-bop, free-bop and post-bop are recast by the jazz quintet of trumpet player Nate Wooley, who’s admired for his adventurous and innovative playing.

Nate Wooley is considered a contemporary innovator of the trumpet, an adventurous musician fascinated by jazz as well as avant-garde. He became a professional player at 13 and in 2001 he moved from placid Oregon to New York. As one of the most outstanding trumpet players of the adventurous Brooklyn scene he regularly performed with icons such as John Zorn, Anthony Braxton and Fred Frith.

His jazz quintet has been involved in recasting the hard bop and free bop jazz traditions of the 1960s and 70s. Wooley’s playing in this setting has been compared to that of Miles Davis and Don Cherry. Recently the group has been performing new arrangements of Wynton Marsalis compositions from the early 80s.

‘This is exploratory, varied music, alive with passion and dialogue. It’s also exuberant. While Wooley is as ‘at home’ with free improvisation as any musician, the forms here emphasize the expressiveness of his lines: on the mournful My Story, My Story he combines variations of pitch and inflection to achieve an emotional depth equal to that of Miles Davis or Don Cherry, rare terrain for any trumpeter’ (The New York City Jazz Review about Nate Wooley’s album (Sit In) The Throne of Friendship).
