As a prelude to the annual Dutch Book Week, well-known Dutch authors and poets will perform at the Bimhuis with the band of guitarist Corrie van Binsbergen. The main guests are Esther Gerritsen, Anne Vegter and Tommy Wieringa, writer of the Book Week Gift 2014.

In 2003 Corrie van Binsbergen started her very first series of ‘Writers in Concert’ featuring Remco Campert, Toon Tellegen, Manon Uphoff and Kees van Kooten. Her unique style of combining music with literature proved to be successful. Many concert series and performances followed, with various writers and poets from The Netherlands and Flanders. The many spin-off projects include music theatre with Hans Dagelet and opera with Josse de Pauw. All of these activities have spawned a great tradition during Book Week at the Bimhuis, the annual BrokkenBal, a special edition of Writers in Concerts with several literary guests.

Writer and columnist Esther Gerritsen will receive this year’s Frans Kellendonk Prize, awarded every three years to a Dutch author whose oeuvre shows and independent spirit and an original view on social and existential politics. Rotterdam-based author and poet Anne Vegter was appointed Dichter des Vaderlands in 2013, which means that she will perform as the official Dutch national poet for four years. Vegter started her literary career as a writer of children’s books and has written plays, stories and novels as well. Tommy Wieringa has two the two most popular Dutch literary awards last year for his novel Dit zijn de namen.

For this edition of BrokkenBal, Corrie van Binsbergen has formed a new ensemble featuring Mete Erker, Miguel Boelens, Morris Kliphuis, Joost Buis, Dion Nijland and Yonga Sun.She will also perform with Albert van Veenedaal who will play prepared piano.

‘There’s only one BrokkenBal. Guitarist and composer Corrie van Binsbergen is unique as a key figure in the Dutch music scene and she creates a unique concert with stories presented organically by writers, poets and actors’ (Parool).
