The Clazz Ensemble plays new music by various composers inspired by Thelonious Monk (1917-1982), the groundbreaking composer and jazz pianist. The concert has a special format, in which unique, adapted video images of the maestro himself will be projected on stage.

Clazz is a ‘small big band’ that brings together top musicians from the jazz and classical music fields. For Monk Inside Out, the ensemble commissioned young as well as established creators from varied musical directions. From contemporary music Maud Sauer and Leonard Evers were asked. Jazz and improvised music is represented by Frank Carlberg (New York), Jasper le Clercq, Arend Niks, Dick de Graaf and Jesse Passenier.

This project is envisioned in a remarkable way. During the concert the musicians will not only inhabit the main stage, but they will sometimes move around the venue, in the spirit of a festival. The audience will see soloists as well as small line-ups, interchanged with performances by the entire 12-piece ensemble. Various band members will introduce parts with stories about Monk and his work. During the evening video projections will be shown with images of Monk himself.

‘Clazz mixes classical music and jazz in a captivating way’ (de Volkskrant).

‘They boost the spirit, cheering up even the most compulsive grumbler’ (Vrij Nederland).
