Speeches by Obama, Berlusconi or Wilders, news about the credit crunch, and prostitutes complaining about their pimps; these and similar fragments from the media serve as points of departure for the music of Jacob ter Veldhuis, one of the most successful contemporary Dutch composers. His new video opera THE NEWS will be performed by Clazz Ensemble, a ‘small big band’ featuring top musicians from both jazz and classical music. Prior to this performance Clazz will play earlier pieces of JacobTV and works by composers he admires: Guus Janssen, Martin Fondse and Marco C. de Bruin. ‘Dutch composer JacobTV samples pop culture and gives it a melody’ (New York Times).
