What has flamenco got to do with the folk music of the gauchos (cowboys) of Colombia and Venezuela? In the virtuoso interplay of swinging strings, lightning fast syncopations, and clashing rhythms. And in the ‘zapateado’, the fast kind of tap dance, reminiscent of flamenco. The joropo, is the musical melting pot of los llanos, the vast plains along the banks of the Orinoco River, of Spanish baroque music, the rhythms of African slaves and the folk culture of Andalusia. The joropo resembles a waltz, suddenly erupting into rhythms so fast one can hardly keep up with them. Cimarrón is considered one of the finest groups in the genre. Their album ‘Sí Soy Llanera’ on the prestigious Smithsonian label was nominated for a Grammy. Spain and Colombia shuttle back and forth in a swinging groove. After the show 17.00 hrs. € 5 (free admission for visitors concert CIMARRÓN) WORKSHOP JOROPO DANCE Members of the group will give joropo dance lessons after the show. A go-as-you-please tickt for the entire programme (afternoon + evening) on 2 November in the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ and Bimhuis costs € 62. Box office and Bimhuis café open at 2.00PM.
