CHRISTIAN WALLUMRØD QUARTET

i.c.w. Tropentheater – Serie ECM in Concert

Arve Henriksen-trumpet, Nils Økland-violin, hardanger fiddle, viola d’amore, Per Oddvar Johansen-drums, Christian Wallumrød-piano, harmonium, toy piano

Keyboard player and composer Christian Wallumrød is a prominent musician in the contemporary Norwegian jazz scene. His quartet has an unusual line-up, with jazz trumpet player Arve Henriksen, drummer Per Oddvar Johansen and folk musician Nils Økland on the hardangar fiddle, a Norwegian stringed instrument. The result is nuanced, typically Scandinavian music, inspired by rough nature and influenced by the harmonious minimalism of composers such as Arvo Pärt. The Norwegian composer and pianist generally plays in small ensembles, several of which were recorded by Nordic record company ECM. ‘Very quiet, but very strong’ (The Guardian).
