CHRISTIAN WALLUMRØD ENSEMBLE

Afterwards at the café: DJ Phonautogram

Christian Wallumrød piano/harmonium, Eivind Lønning trompet, Gjermund Larsen (alt-/hardanger-)viool, Espen Reinertsen tenorsax, Tove Törngren cello, Per Oddvar Johansen drums/vibrafoon

The band of Norwegian pianist, composer and harmonium player Christian Wallumrød creates sophisticated, very concentrated music which has the freedom of jazz and at the same time incorporates elements of minimal music, baroque and Scandinavian folk. The six-piece group has a remarkable line-up with an important part for the hardanger fiddle, a Norwegian bowed instrument.

Wallumrød is known for his quiet, chamber-like jazz. He plays in various small line-ups, of which several have been recorded by quality label ECM. Christian is the brother of Susanna Wallumrød, of Susanna & the Magic Orchestra.

‘Scandinavians have often experimented with indigenous folk, classical music and improvisation, but there is no band that does it with more beauty and thoughtfulness than Christian Wallumrød’s ensemble’ (de Volkskrant).

‘Very quiet, but very strong’ (The Guardian)

The European tour with Christian Wallumrød Ensemble is supported by Fund for performing artists and the Norwegian Jazzforum.
