Transparent, buoyant and direct is how the press describes this New York super trio featuring saxophonist Chris Speed, double bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Dave King (The Bad Plus).

Whoever treads the path of the timeless saxophone trios of Sonny Rollins or Joe Henderson must really be able to stand his ground. For decades, Chris Speed has established himself as a saxophonist able to jump between any style, from klezmer to avant-jazz. Drummer Dave King is equally flexible, accustomed to crossing over borders between jazz and pop with successful group The Bad Plus. Together with double bass talent Chris Tordini they have built a beautiful repertory with original compositions alongside tunes by Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane.

Saxophone and clarinet player Chris Speed is an established name in New York. In the late 1980s he made his breakthrough with Human Feel, which in hindsight can be called an all-star band featuring super talents Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jim Black and Andrew D’Angelo. Chris Tordini has played double bass with among others Tigran and drummer Dave King conquers jazz as well as rock audiences with both The Bad Plus and his own Dave King Trucking Company.

‘Most of the trio’s material is delightfully direct, buoyant, and swinging. We get three of today’s strongest players seamlessly connecting their abiding love and respect for jazz tradition with an inherent interest in pushing the music forward’ (Chicago Reader).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open after the concert (reservations via 020-7882158).
