Drummer Ches Smith has a fondness for musical eccentrics. Prior to his percussion studies at the prestigious Mills College he improvised with punks and metalheads in his native California. He developed his sonically exuberant style in the bands of New Yorkers Marc Ribot and Tim Berne .
