CHES SMITH / CRAIG TABORN / MAT MANERI

AFTERWARDS DJ DE WISSELTRUC AT THE CAFE

Mat Maneri viola, Craig Taborn piano, Ches Smith drums

Dynamic chamber music by well-known improvising musicians from New York, in a surprising line-up: viola, piano and percussion. Their collaborative debut album The Bell appeared on the ECM label.

Their remarkable chemistry appeared instantaneously in an improvised music gig in New York and ever since they form a close-knit trio, despite their full schedules: founder and composer Ches Smith plays in among others Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog and Tim Berne’s Snakoil, and pianist Craig Taborn and viola player Mat Maneri are members of other renowned ensembles as well. Their first album The Bell (ECM) is making waves with critics worldwide. The Bell starts with the sounding of a bell and becomes increasingly richer and louder, from quiet chamber music to intense sound eruptions. Melody remains the leading principle in the compositions of Ches Smith, who switches between drums and classical percussion instruments.

‘A superb trio… seductively narcotic writing with a mixture of brooding melody and rich texture’ (Chicago Reader).

In collaboration with AKAMU SAS.
