CHANO DOMÍNGUEZ & NIÑO JOSELE
Sunday26 October 2014

These Spanish masters achieve a natural blend of flamenco and jazz. Presentation of their first collaborative album Chano & Josele on the quality label Calle 54.

As if they have been playing together for years: that is how pianist Chano Domínguez and guitarist Niño Josele sound on their first duo album Chano & Josele. Their mix of flamenco and jazz, with hints of classical music and gitano swing, is passionate, spontaneous and all but traditional. Alongside Spanish influences the album contains Brazilian music and compositions by Henry Mancini, Lennon/McCartney and jazz pianist John Lewis.

Chano Domínguez comes from Cádiz in Andalusia, the cradle of flamenco. Flamenco pianists are rare, but when Chano imitates the techniques of flamenco guitar players it sounds like the piano was made for it. Chano is famous for his mix of flamenco and latin jazz, with which he has made an impression at several Grammy competitions. He has performed with, among others, Enrique Morente, Paco de Lucía and Herbie Hancock.

Guitarist Niño Josele was born in Almería in Southers Spain. For years he had performed with his role model Paco de Lucía, until the master advised him to go his own way. Twenty years later Josele can look back on a beautiful career, where he shared the spotlight with countless jazz heroes including Freddy Cole, Phil Woods and Tom Harrell. His playing is partly influenced by the Spanish classical repertoire and partly by the music of the gitano’s, the Romani people in Spain.
