CEDAR WALTON TRIO
Cedar Walton piano, David Williams bas, Willie Jones III drums
Pianist Cedar Walton played on the revolutionary Giant Steps (1960) by John Coltrane. That makes him the second famous Coltrane sideman appearing at the Bimhuis this month, after trombonist Curtis Fuller. Jazz musicians love Walton’s mix of blues and bop. He has composed classic tunes for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, the band that he played with during the early 1960s. With his own trio he still improvises on a high level. ‘Pure jazz gold… the stream of ideas and energy never lets up for a minute’ (Daily Telegraph).
