Cecil Taylor is not only one of the most outstanding characters in jazz music but he is also one of the greatest piano virtuosos in any musical genre. Since his first recording (‘Jazz Advance’ 1955) Taylor never ceased to amaze the world. As if by magic, he always finds new ways to transform the spirit of Ellington or Monk, the touch of Bud Powell, the blues or a hidden motif of Chopin into highly personal Taylor music. He unites the abstract and the earthly in grand gestures. Noone can make his instrument roar and then sing softly the way he does. Every concert of this Shaman of the piano is a ritual where poetry, physical effort and breathtaking lyricism melts into a grand, sensual happening. Like at his last concert at the Bimhuis, almost ten years ago, he will perform with his duo partner, British drummer Tony Oxley, in an almost telepathic collaboration.
