During the Night of Jazz (Nacht van de Jazz*), boundary-breaking trumpeter Peter Evans gets carte blanche at the Bimhuis with his New York quintet and special guests Jean-Paul Bourelly, Miako Klein en Joel Ryan.

New York-based trumpet player Peter Evans is a technical genius with an unbridled urge for innovation. His compositions and improvisations are exciting collage pieces, with bits of contemporary microtonal music, pre-war jazz and futuristic electronics. He has played astounding concerts at the Bimhuis with the band Mostly Other People Do the Killing and with his own New York-based quintet, in which computer musician Sam Pluta plays a key role. For his carte blanche he has chosen to perform once again with his quintet as well as with three special guests: Jean-Paul Bourelly, Miako Klein and Joel Ryan.

Master guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly has collaborated with, among others, Miles Davis, Muhal Richard Abrams and Cassandra Wilson and is a member of the Black Rock Coalition. Berlin-based Maiko Klein plays violin as well as recorder and is active in contemporary, early and improvised music. Joel Ryan is part of the first generation of computer musicians. Since 1984 he works for STEIM (Studio for Electro Instrumental Music) in Amsterdam, bringing together live performance and electronic music.

CARTE BLANCHE SERIES

For years, several times each season, the Bimhuis has been offering carte blanche to remarkable talents from the Dutch and international music worlds. Over the years this opportunity to curate a concert evening has led to the most surprising one-off collaborations as well as many new ensembles.

Next up in the Carte Blanche series is pianist Harmen Fraanje, who will present his unique program on 28 December. In 2016 the series will feature among others guitarist Ava Mendoza and pianist Alexander Hawkins.
