The expressive, bluesy sound of alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade fits comfortably within any musical setting, as evident from the Stranger than Paranoia festivals he has been organizing for years in his hometown of Tilburg. For his carte blanche concert at the BIMHUIS he has again selected widely varied ensembles, featuring among others Dutch fusion jazz pioneer Jasper van ’t Hof and Russion avant-garde pianist Leonid Vintskevich. Van Kemenade celebrates his 40th anniversary as a musician this year.

For years, several times each season, the BIMHUIS has been offering carte blanche to remarkable talents from the Dutch and international music worlds. Over the years this opportunity to curate a concert evening has led to the most surprising one-off collaborations as well as many new ensembles.

‘Alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade would not be out of place in one of the volcanic groups of Charles Mingus, considering his passion, the highly personal ‘cry’ in his playing, the relentless swing and the blues feel’ (de Volkskrant).
‘His alto darts and dives luxuriously, a rainbow feathered bird of paradise riding to the stratosphere’ (Downbeat, *****-review of Van Kemenade’s album Close Enough).
