CARTE BLANCHE OĞUZ BÜYÜKBERBER

The first Carte Blanche of the season is given to Oğuz Büyükberber. The bass clarinet is the principal means of expression for this Turkish-Dutch performer. By applying live electronics, visuals and improvisation he has developed a language that blends Turkish music, jazz and contemporary composition. Among the guests on this special evening are Simon Nabatov, Wolter Wierbos and Gerry Hemingway.

Büyükberber, Nabatov, Hemingway Trio
This trio came to life in 2010 when Büyükberber was invited to create a new project for the 20th Anniversary celebration of the Akbank Jazz Festival in Istanbul. The trio’s immediate synergy created memorable results. Taking the instrumentation of the Benny Goodman Trio and stretching it with all kinds of extended techniques, they create a groovy, abstract music.

Oğuz Büyükberber Solo
Having performed countless solo concerts around the world, Oğuz Büyükberber presents his audio-visual, electro-acoustic piece “Relearning to Write”. In this piece a structured improvisation on bass clarinet integrates with the visuals, which use Büyükberber’s own hand-drawn artwork as source material.

Roots of this Istanbul based trio reach back to Büyükberber’s musical beginnings 20 years ago, and demonstrate his devotion to energy and focus. Dense virtuosity meets strong emotional expression. They will be presenting a taste of their new release on Trytone Records, “Gibi”.

The Carte Blanche Ensemble
For the premiere of “3D in the Dark” Büyükberber invites a number of unique musicians from the Amsterdam contemporary music and jazz scenes. Together with the featured trios, a dynamic 10 piece ensemble is formed. The composition is funded by Het Fonds Podiumkunsten.
