CARTE BLANCHE MICHAEL VATCHER
‘THERE’S A BOAT THAT’S LEAVING SOON…’

Known for decades as a leading drummer/percussionist in the
Amsterdam jazz and improvised music scene, Michael Vatcher will soon be
moving to New York. This is his carte blanche concert at the Bimhuis.
For
years the American percussionist Michael Vatcher has been one of the
tastemakers of Dutch improvised music. In the summer of 1979 he moved
from New York to Amsterdam with the jazz group, accompanying the theatre
makers, dancers and clowns of The Great Salt Lake Mime Troupe. Since
then he has been collaborating with musicians as well as dancers, actors
and visual artists, from American contemporaries such as Michael Moore
and Katie Duck to top international players such as John Zorn and Ken
Vandermark.
Vatcher’s carte blanche at the Bimhuis is dedicated
to his upcoming move to New York. He will perform with reeds player
Michael Moore, who’s also a member of Available Jelly, pianist Achim
Kaufmann and double bassist Wilbert de Joode.
‘Michael Vatcher
has mastered, in his own way, a surprising range of styles. His first
instruments were marimba and vibraphone and this can still be heard in
the way he combines rhythmic patterns and melodic lines, coloring them
with cartoonish sound effects from his countless ‘toys’. He is
constantly in demand, which proves that his contributions are on point’
(de Volkskrant).
‘A fabulously inventive drummer’ (The Wire).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.00 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
