Award-winning Dutch dance company LeineRoebana has been offered carte blanche by the Bimhuis. Music has a fundamental part in the work of Andrea Leine and Harijono Roebana.

The two have developed their own language of movement and they combine dance with other disciplines, most prominently music. The choreographers prefer live music and they often commission composers, musicians and singers for exclusive collaborations. For previous projects they have commissioned composers including Yannis Kyriakides and Maarten Altena. The work of LeineRoebana has been performed in Europe as well as The United States, Canada, Russia, Africa and Indonesia.

For this carte blanche series at the Bimhuis, LeineRoebana will bring its collaboration with Iwan Gunawan to new heights. The Indonesian composer and musician is known for the successful dance performance Ghost Track.

Gunawan is rooted in Sundanese music culture, but don’t expect traditional gamelan, because his urge to experiment is too strong. He combines classical gamelan instruments with piano, saxophone or live electronics in his group Kyai Fatahillah.

This carte blanche focuses on unexpected encounters between Gunawan’s ensemble and wildly varied personalities, including Theo Loevendie and Diego Soifer, percussionist Han Bennink en violinist Liza Ferschtman, as well as singer/songwriter Leona Philippo.

In what way does the music of the aforenamed change when approached by Sundanese musicians and their instruments? In what way does the music of Loevendie, Ferschtman and Soifer change the sonority of Kyai Fatahillah and what does the gamelan-infused spirit of Iwam Gunawan come up with for Lisa Ferschtman? Featuring unexpected, self-styles chorographical contributions by LeineRoebana.

‘Andrea Leine and Harijono Roebana show that they’re leaders in the field of choreographic innovation’ (NRC Handelsblad).

The Carte Blanche Series have been realised with the support of Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst.
