CARTE BLANCHE HAN BUHRS

TRIO BAARS/MENGELBERG/BUHRS Ab Baars-tenor saxophone, clarinet, Misha Mengelberg-piano, Han Buhrs-vocals VELTERLOOP 4
Tatiana Koleva-vocals, René van Barneveld-guitar, Luc Ex-bass guitar, Han Buhrs-vocals, electronics

The set with Misha and Ab needs only little explanation. It was Misha himself that came up with the idea to work together, years ago in some dressing room. It was just a hint, but not one you easily forget. I suggested to ask Ab to join us, he knows us both, a bit. I don’t know whether this is of any help. Ab will surely not lie down between us like ’trait d’union’. ‘The backgrounds of the musicians who populate the other set say something about my goal: a combination of rock musical and contemporary classical building stones, kept together by improvisational cement. Luc Ex (known from 4 Walls, a.o.) and I have been doing this since a while now. Tatiana was on my mind since I saw her playing the premiere of an Andriessen piece. To use classical, ’tonal’ percussion instead of drums increases the transparency and I like that a lot since my days with The Schismatics. René was mentioned in the Volkskrant as being the best rock guitarist of the Netherlands -he was Tres Manos of the Urban Dance Squad- but not everyone in the jazz world knows this. I played with him in various settings and circumstances.’ ‘Note: About the provisional name: Velter was the mean looking bicycle repairman of the village I was born in. He had a limp and a little fag hanging from the corner of his mouth.’
