Illustrious American percussionist Hamid Drake meets among others horn players of ICP Orchestra and the live-remix musicians of Norwegian entity PUNKT: urgent, playful and unpredictable.
Hamid Drake is one of the most illustrious and adventurous percussionists of this moment. With his independent spirit he departs from his Afro-American music roots into the field of improvisation in jazz and world music. For his Carte Blanche concert at the Bimhuis he has picked a line-up both surprising and obvious. As the core member he conducts an unlikely encounter between the members of ICP Orchestra, pianist Kaja Draksler and the live remixing crew of Norwegian PUNKT: Jan Bang, Erik Honoré and guitarist Eivind Aarset. It’s obvious because Drake has worked with both parties before, and surprising because the combination as a whole is completely new and unprecedented.
What the various parties share is the principle of instant composing: the open form, the improvisational attitude of creating music in real time. The difference lies in their modus operandi and the variety of instruments used. The ICP musicians (re)act instantly on the contributions of their fellow musicians; The PUNKT musicians together act on a preceding performance as a whole in their subsequent improvising live-remix with electronic and acoustic instruments.
Hamid Drake brings it all together and challenges the musicians to pull all the stops, inventively re-orientate and rewrite their routines. Drake is simultaneously free and bound in this situation. He leads the acoustic/analog-oriented musicians towards ambient electronica and vice versa.
The concert will start with a duo of Hamid with vibraphone player Pasquale Mirra.
The concertzender dedicated their broadcast of January 16 to Hamid Drake because of this Carte Blanche.
