CARTE BLANCHE CHES SMITH

WE ALL BREAK – A meeting of Haitian drums and creative music

Matt Mitchell piano, Daniel Brevil Haitian drums, Markus Schwartz Haitian drums/percussion, Ches Smith drums/percussion

Visionary drummer and composer Ches Smith is making waves in the improvised music scene of New York. Via obscure noise and indie rock bands he has ended up in Marc Ribot’s leading trio Ceramic Dog. Now he’s offered a carte blanche to compile his own evening.

We All Break is a new cross-cultural ensemble led by Ches Smith featuring Master Haitian drummers Daniel Brevil and Markus Schwartz, and jazz pianist Matt Mitchell. Especially for this carte blanche the group will premiere a new piece entitled An Opening, a multi-movement work where improvisation lies at the crossroads of Haitian music and jazz.

‘It’s a joy to see him perform’, said de Volkskrant about Ches Smith. Downbeat compared him to a classical percussionist, because of his imaginative investigations outside rock and jazz territory. ‘Smith’s writing is breathlessly episodic, with his tunes constantly morphing into fresh melodic schemes, rhythmic feels, and harmonies’ (Chicago Reader).

The Carte Blanche Series have been realised with the support of Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
