CARTE BLANCHE AVA MENDOZA
SPECIAL GUEST: JOHN DIKEMAN
AFTERWARDS: DJ ROBO
Ava Mendoza gitaar/zang, Tim Dahl bas, Sam Ospovat drums/percussie & special guest John Dikeman sax
Carte blanche for guitarist Ava Mendoza from Brooklyn. Her exciting music moves between avant-jazz, rock and noise. ‘Imagine Dick Dale shredding with Derek Bailey’ (NPR). Special guest for this Carte Blanche: Amsterdam based saxophonist John Dikeman.
Ava Mendoza has mastered many guitar styles, from classical to blues and the adventurous experiments of her former teachers Nels Cline (Wilco) and Fred Frith. Her guitar playing balances between melody and atonality, between beauty and raw abstraction. She has collaborated with countless international musicians, but her main project is Unnatural Ways from Brooklyn, New York. The Bimhuis offers her carte blanche to curate this concert evening.
‘Imagine Dick Dale shredding with Derek Bailey, then forget everything you know about Dick or Derek – that’s Ava Mendoza’ (NPR).
‘What obscure, overlooked master playing in some slashing, raw-yet-virtuosic manner is this? (Nels Cline over Ava Mendoza).
