Carte Blanche for British rising star pianist/Hammond-organist
Alexander Hawkins, who will perform new compositions with his
London-based ensemble, partly augmented with peers from the Amsterdam
scene.
Alexander Hawkins has performed at the Bimhuis
several times, playing ethio-jazz with Mulatu Astatke and South African
jazz with Louis Moholo-Moholo as well as hardcore improv with Han
Bennink. It indicates the broad range of the 34 year-old pianist, one of
the fastest emerging voices of British jazz. He developed a profound
knowledge of jazz piano history and is simultaneously regarded as one of
the most interesting Hammond organ players of our time.
Hawkins’s
fascination for composition and love for free improvisation emerge in
his ensemble featuring distinctive voices from the London scene, known
from bands such as Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra and Sons
of Kemet. For the second set of this carte blanche concert the ensemble
will be augmented with peers from Amsterdam: Harald Austbø, Yedo Gibson,
Ada Rava and Morris Kliphuis. This formation will perform new music
especially arranged for this concert.
